#AdvocacyMatters: Independence through Employment

September 1, 2023 / #AdvocacyMatters

Independence is a key component of an equitable society, and only when people have access to the tools and resources necessary to live, work, learn, and go where and how they choose can true equity come into focus. Our advocacy addresses these needs in multiple ways, like working so that students with disabilities receive the free and appropriate public education they are entitled to in an integrated setting, to continuing to push expanded access to home and community-based services for disabled people all across the state. As Ohio’s designated Client Assistance Program, we advocate for and protect the rights of Ohioans receiving vocational rehabilitation (VR) services and assist with preparing for, finding, maintaining, and advancing in competitive, integrated employment.

Earlier this week we launched our new #WorkTipWednesday series, a weekly bit of information from our Client Assistance Program team. Over the next few months, this series will cover topics like explaining Vocational Rehabilitation, eligibility and application for VR services, transition-aged youth, Individualized Plans for Employment, employment goal setting, and more. Week-by-week through the end of the year, these informational nuggets will help provide clarity to a complex topic.

While this new series is being carefully crafted by our experts and advocates, it will only be successful and effective if the information reaches those who need it. Understanding the importance of these opportunities relative to our vision of equity, we’re asking that our allies and supporters help amplify this information by sharing far and wide. Our full library of tools and resources is also always available at disabilityrightsohio.org/client-assistance-program
