#AdvocacyMatters: Planning for Success
November 15, 2024 / #AdvocacyMatters
The transition from youth to adulthood can be confusing. For students with disabilities, proper planning can go a long way in supporting a successful transition. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA), the IEP team must begin transition planning requirements no later than the annual IEP during which the student will turn 16 and must be updated annually thereafter. In Ohio, the team must begin transition planning no later than the annual IEP during which the student turns 14. If appropriate, transition planning can begin prior to a student’s 14th birthday.
Earlier this week we debuted a new series of videos for transition-aged youth and their families. These helpful videos cover topics like transition services planning, extended eligibility, transition resources, vocational rehabilitation (VR) services, and more. Available in both English and Spanish, we hope that these new resources help families navigate this transition more easily.

Successful transition planning provides a clearer, more organized path for students to take their next steps forward into adulthood. By being involved in setting goals and shaping their future, young people can learn to better advocate for themselves for the rest of their life.
